Mexican Immigration to the United States

by Hessam Aazami Mexican Immigration is a complex demographic phenomenon that has been a major source of population growth and cultural change throughout much of the history of the United States. The economic, social, and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding ethnicity, economic benefits, and jobs for non-immigrants, settlement patterns, impact on upward social mobility, crime, and voting behavior. In 2006 the United States accepted more legal immigrants as permanent residents than all other countries in the world combined. After ethnic quotas on immigration were removed in 1965 the number of actual (first-generation) immigrants living in the United States eventually quadrupled, from 9.6 million in 1970 to about 38 million in 2007.Over one million persons were naturalized as U.S. citizens in 2008. The leading countries of origin of immigrants to the United States were Mexico, India, the Philippines, and China. Nearly 14 million immigrants entered the United States from 2000 to 2010. Mexico represents the largest source of immigration to the United States. Of the 32.5 million foreign born covered in the March 2002 CPS, 9.8 million or 30 percent were from Mexico; the next largest source, the Philippines, accounted for only one-seventh as many at 1.4 million. The rest of Latin America accounted for 7.3 million or 23 percent. Asian immigrants, at 8.5 million, made up 26 percent of the total foreign-born population. There were 5.4 million foreign born from Europe and Canada, accounting for 17 percent of all immigrants. Africa and the remaining countries, at 1.4 million, made up four percent of all foreign born. Mexican immigrants account for about one-fifth of the legal immigrants living in the United States. This large percentage is actually a legacy of the legalization programs of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), under which about two million formerly undocumented Mexicans acquired legal status. In terms of the annual inflow of legal immigrants, about one in seven is Mexican. This share is substantially larger than the legal flow from any other country. Mexico is also the single largest source of undocumented immigrants. There were an estimated 9.3 million undocumented immigrants in the United States as of March 2002. Note that this estimate encompasses those included in the March 2002 CPS plus an allowance for those missed. Of these, about 5.3 million or 57 percent were from Mexico. The rest of Latin America (mainly Central America) accounts for another two million or fewer than 25 percent. Asia at about 0.9 million represents 10 percent. Europe and Canada together account for about five percent, as do Africa and the rest of the world. How do people legally immigrate into the United States? Almost a million people legally immigrated into the U.S. in 2004 under qualifying categories: The categories are: • Employment-based preference is a category that permits a limited number of individuals who possess job skills which are in demand by the economy. In 2002, this group was dominated by persons with computer and engineering skills. Family preference is a category that permits individuals to sponsor a limited number of relatives (adult children of U.S. citizens, spouses and children of immigrants, and siblings of citizens). • Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens is a category that permits citizens to sponsor an unlimited number of minor children, spouses, and parents. This has been the largest category. • Diversity is a category authorized by recent legislation which authorizes a limited number of individuals to immigrate based on past under-representation in the immigrant population. Refugees/Asylees are admitted on a limited basis based on political and humanitarian reasons. The maximum numbers vary year-to-year based on Presidential determinations. What is the difference between legal immigrants and citizens? Legal immigrants are basically entitled to the same rights as citizens although they cannot vote or hold political office. About 40% of immigrants become citizens through a process called naturalization. In order to become naturalized, immigrants must reside in the U.S. for five years. Most must demonstrate a proficiency in English and knowledge of U.S. history and government. The primary motive for immigrants to become citizens is that they qualify to assist their relatives immigrate. Visa Requirements - Citizens of Mexico Citizens and permanent residents of Mexico generally must have a nonimmigrant visa or Border Crossing Card (also known as a "Laser Visa"). For ease of travel, the B1/B2 and the Border Crossing Card have been combined into one biometric and machine readable document (DSP-150). Select Border Crossing Card to learn more about this card. Illegal Immigration to Canada

by Shane Hill Add to that the government's cost on maintaining these illegal immigrants. Now, this begs the question, "Do illegal immigrants pay taxes?" The answer to the question is yes and no. Contrary to popular belief, many illegals do pay their taxes. This is not just a product of a very creative mind; it is a fact that has been acknowledged by none other than the Federal Government. In 2008, it was estimated that about $9 billion dollars worth of tax was paid by illegals. This is despite the fact that they are not eligible for tax credits or Social Security benefits. The amount is substantial enough to merit a large contribution from the often maligned minority group in the country. Of course not all illegals pay taxes, but for those who do, the contribution is substantial enough to add funds to Medicare and Social Security, which benefit Americans more than the illegal aliens. What does this mean? It means that there is substantial funding from illegals that would benefit the baby boomers who are now in the retiring age. Not many people know this fact and they condescendingly ask "Do illegal immigrants pay taxes?" Given the important contribution of illegals when it comes to paying taxes, anti illegal immigration groups have continued to express their sentiments on the government's inability to track down illegal aliens and deport them to their respective home countries.
While nationally, there is no law that would force authorities to keep track of illegal immigrants, Arizona has passed a law that could be the spark that would ignite a major crackdown on these illegal aliens.
Word is that several states near the US-Mexico border are seriously considering following suit, but they are proceeding with caution and planning things secretly. They are said to be closely monitoring the developments in Arizona and playing things by ear. Perhaps if they know the answer to the question, " Do illegal immigrants pay taxe?" they would not be too hasty in passing discriminatory laws designed to track down illegal immigrants. In the history of human population, the humans have always moved from one land to another more prospect land, otherwise known as immigration. Immigration is the movement of one country into another for the sole purpose of a stable residence. The United States has long been considered as a stable residence for many and is known as the "free country," where residents have full freedom on rights in which they choose and allege. Since each year, an increasing percentage of immigration occurs in the United States. Immigrants from foreign countries immigrating to the United States have been a controversial topic of debate. Some of the biggest problems of immigration within the United States is the contemporized issues with regards to illegal immigrants, job settlement, and economic benefits. Immigrants travel everywhere in search of more prospect land to live upon and initially settle for a place close to home. For the immigrants that were not accepted by other closer countries, they turn to the United States as a possible solution to reside their needs. Immigrants decide to settle in the United States from inspirational dreams of prosperity and opportunity not found in the third world. While immigrants from third world countries look upon the United States for prosperity, there is also another type of immigrant called illegal immigrants. Immigration Problem in Canada - Finding jobs

by Michael Kapoustin Job problems face by an immigrant to Canada and the job system there in Canada. The article deals with what those thinking of immigrating to Canada should look on in the job front before taking the step. Canada does seem a dreamland for all the immigrants. They are given a world of promises and a picture of rosiness all around. But the goings isn't that smooth in that country. No doubt Canada has got one of the best healthcare systems in the world and is a great country to live in; there are unseen difficulties when one decides to migrate to Canada. First and foremost of them, is to find a job. It would not be wrong to say that plenty of people with Ph.D's and M.D's have to earn their livelihood by even working as a janitor as they do not find a job! Yes, upon their arrival in Canada, these people see that their qualifications like in the point system are not recognized in the country! So unless they again go to a college and take education in that country for a number of years, they would not be eligible to work in the same post which they had done in their home country, perhaps even quite successfully over the years! People of many professions have to face this brunt. Lawyers from the UK have to complete 1.5 years in a law school in Canada before they could sit for the Bar exam there. And if you take the 250,000 cap for Canadian immigrants you would see that Canada always has an influx of immigrants. Not only this, many immigrants' face language problems having come from a different part of the world and thus it is extra difficult for them to secure a job. Even if the companies do take on these immigrants, without the proper knowledge of a language, productivity is bound to reduce ultimately harming the company. Immigrants to Canada need to take care of the job factor before blindly following the route to Canada with an image set by the Canadian government, as that of a country which provides happiness and solace to all with absolutely no hassles. Immigrants to Canada need to take care of the job factor before blindly following the route to Canada with an image set by the Canadian government, as that of a country which provides happiness and solace to all with absolutely no hassles. About the Author Finding jobs in Canada is a painful task. One has to complete several Canadian Immigration Laws.
